Meanwhile, the Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights squads in the Laurie Daley Cup and Andrew Johns Cup competitions kicked off their seasons.

SG Ball Cup (Men's U19's) | Knights 22-24 Bears

The SG Ball side almost staged a late comeback, eventually defeated by two points by the North Sydney Bears in Sydney on Saturday.

Knights winger Aidan Gow notched four tries but it wasn't enough as the Under 19's suffered back-to-back losses.

Newcastle will play Penrith next start down at Windsor Sports Complex in Round 3.

Tarsha Gale Cup (Women's U19's) | Knights 6-30 Indigenous Academy Roosters

The Tarsha Gale Cup side were downed by 24 points by the Roosters on Saturday.

Half Maronay Smuts scored the sole try for Newcastle as the side were outgunned six tries to one.

The Under 19's squad will travel down to Canberra in Round 3 for a clash with the Raiders.

Harold Matthews Cup (Men's U17's) | Knights 24-22 Bears

This week, the Harold Matthews Cup squad were on the right end of a close game, winning by two points over the North Sydney Bears.

The side started fast scoring two tries in the opening 10 minutes, while Callum Elsley bagged a double before half-time.

Laurie Daley Cup (Men's U18's) | NMR Knights 28-30 NC Bulldogs

The Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights Laurie Daley Cup squad kicked off their campaign with a heartbreaking loss to the North Coast Bulldogs at Kurri Kurri on Saturday.

After leading for the majority of the game, the Bulldogs staged a second half comeback and scored in the last minute to win the game.

The NMR Knights will be back in action in Tamworth next Saturday, coming up against the Northern Tigers.

The NMR Knights Andrew Johns Cup squad scored their first win of the season with a 14-point victory over the Bulldogs.
