Knights put first points on the board with gutsy win over the Roosters

The nib Newcastle Knights NRLW side have recorded their first win of the campaign with a gutsy 12-10 win over the Sydney Roosters at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Two late Roosters tries set up a grandstand finish, however the Knights held on to their lead off the back of a solid defensive performance from the first half.

The premiers picked up where they left off making it 10 wins in a row dating back to last season.

HOW IT PLAYED OUT:

1st min - The match kicked off at McDonald Jones Stadium in front of over 3,000 Members and supporters at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Knights defence was on point in the opening stages repelling multiple Roosters attacks.

19th min - After a tough and gruelling opening 20 minutes with the Knights showcasing terrific defence on their own line, Shanice Parker looked to have scored but was denied by putting a foot into touch.

21st min - The Knights weren’t to be denied with Olivia Higgins burrowing over for the first try of the 2024 season shortly after.

26th min - The Knights doubled up with Tamika Upton summing up the numbers on the Roosters right edge to put Abigail Roache through for the Knights second of the night.

35th min - Newcastle took a 10-0 lead into the change of ends.

58th min - Jocelyn Kelleher scored the Roosters first following a Tarryn Aiken chip and chase.

69th min - Aiken again turned provider providing a pin-point kick for Jess Sergis to run out to give the Roosters the chance to send the game to golden point.

Kelleher would miss the conversion on the full-time siren resulting in the Knights holding onto their two point lead.

The Knights NRLW squad will travel down to play Canberra in the nation's capital next Saturday.
