The nib Newcastle Knights are proud to officially release the Club’s 2024 Indigenous Jersey, designed by renowned Newcastle and Hunter Region artist Saretta Fielding.
Fielding’s artwork – titled ‘Powaikaliko Piriraal Malang’, which means ‘Grow Strong Together’ –shares the story of the Knights family, reflecting a commitment to grow through connecting with communities and countries whilst bringing acknowledgement to the Awabakal, Worimi and Wonnarua peoples.
The predominately red jersey, produced by Knights official apparel partner Classic Sportswear, features a backdrop of gathering circles, highlighting community connection and partnership whilst also celebrating the thirteen countries that make up the Knights traditional catchment, from the Hawkesbury River in the south to the north coast and into northwestern New South Wales.
“The expanding circles on the jersey reflects strength and growth, while overlapping as a symbol of unity, understanding and respect as we build trust and work together towards self-determination,” Fielding said of her design.
“Traditional people and Elders symbolism within the design are linked and follow pathways across country together, representing inclusion, support and the journey forward together, as we work towards our shared vision to empower Indigenous people and communities.”
The jersey completes a suite of work that Fielding has provided to the Club which also includes the art contained within the Knights Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2023-25 and the club’s 2024 game day warm up shirts.
With the Knights having the bye in Indigenous Round, the jersey will be worn the following week as the Club marks Reconciliation Week with a home McDonald Jones Stadium fixture against the Bulldogs on Friday, 31 May.
The Knights 2024 Indigenous Jersey is available for sale now online, in the Knights Team Store, and at McDonald Jones Stadium from Sunday’s clash against the New Zealand Warriors.
