Pathways Report: Strong start for Junior Rep sides

Footy is back for 2024 with the nib Newcastle Knights Junior Representative season kickstarting the rugby league calendar with their opening round fixtures.

The Club fielded its first ever side in the Lisa Fiaola Cup (Women's Under 17's) competition with the Knights taking on the Central Coast Roosters last Saturday.

Meanwhile, the junior men's sides and the Tarsha Gale Cup team travelled down to the nation's capital to take on the Canberra Raiders.

For the Newcastle-Maitland Region Knights in the Andrew Johns Cup and Laurie Daley Cup competitions, they faced the Northern Rivers Titans in Round 1 at Ballina.

SG Ball Cup | Knights 56-10 Raiders

Last season's grand finalists started the new season in style running out 46-point victors over the Raiders in Canberra on Saturday.

The side ran in 10 tries to the Raiders two in a dominant display to start their campaign.

With the intent to hit the ground running, the Knights totalled over 1,500 run metres and amassed a 40-6 lead before half-time.

SG Ball: 2024 Round 1 Highlights

Jye Linnane, Sosaia Latu, Logan Aoake grabbed doubles while Haami Loza, Wilson De Courcey, Harley Walker and Cody Hopwood all posted four-pointers.

With over 63% possession, the Knights were relentless from start to finish while fullback Connor Votano added eight goals with the boot.

The SG Ball side will return home next weekend to take on the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Cessnock Sportsground.

Tarsha Gale Cup | Knights 16-10 Raiders

The Women's Under 19's squad started their season with a determined six-point win over the Raiders last Saturday.

Trailing 6-4 at the break, Evah McEwen scored either side of half-time to put the Knights within two points.

McEwen showed her strength with her second try receiving the ball off a scrum before fending off three Raiders defenders to score in the corner.

Tarsha Gale Cup: 2024 Round 1 Highlights

Trailing by two, winger Lacey Mitchell pounced on an intercept to race away to score and put the Knights in front.

Centre Eve Keeling added another try for the red and blue with a minute remaining to secure the two points for the Tarsha Gale Cup side.

In Round 2, the squad will play away traveling down to Hammondville Oval, Sydney to take on the Bulldogs next Saturday.

Harold Matthews Cup | Knights 28-20 Raiders

The Harold Matthews Cup side also got their season off to the perfect start with hard-fought eight point win over the Raiders last Saturday.

The Under 17's side trailed 16-4 at the change of ends, leaking three tries to the Raiders attack while fullback Kyran Blair scored for Newcastle.

The Knights staged a comeback in the second half with four tries of their own.

Harold Matthews: 2024 Round 1 Highlights

Dummy half Diesel Hagan burrowed over close to the line before Canberra hit back four minutes later to move out to a 20-10 lead.

Two crash plays under the posts from Fletcher O'Doherty and Ryder Crosswell brought the Knights ahead before a brilliant break from Beau Hill led to a try to Austyn Ah Toon-Hotene to seal the win.

The Harold Matthews squad will take on the Bulldogs next start back on familiar territory at Cessnock Sportsground.

The Club's first Lisa Fiaola Cup squad started their new season against the Central Coast Roosters down at the Central Coast on Saturday.

After a grinding match, the Roosters finished on top by three tries to one.

Laurie Daley Cup | NMR Knights 14-38 NR Titans

The Newcastle Maitland Region Knights Laurie Daley Cup squad went down by 24 points to the Northern Rivers Titans at Kingsford Smith Park, Ballina on Saturday.

Tyler Jarvis (2) and Darcy Jones both scored tries for the Under 18's squad, although the side would go down by seven tries to three.
