In the build-up to the 2023 NRL season, we caught up with some of our new nib Newcastle Knights players to get to know them a little better.
We sat down with Tyson Gamble to ask him about everything from his move to Newcastle to what he's currently watching on TV.
Having made his NRL debut in 2018 with the Wests Tigers, the versatile half joins from the Broncos after three seasons with the Brisbane club.
Name: Tyson Gamble
Position/s: Halfback/Five-Eighth
Junior Club: I played at a few different ones; I say Albany Creek because that's where I played the longest.
Hometown: Redcliffe.
When did you start playing rugby league?
I started playing when I was 7, which feels like a bloody long time ago now. I started my juniors with Pine Central Holy Spirit, and haven’t missed a year.
Where have you played before?
Moving into senior football: I started at the Redcliffe Dolphins, playing Colts (U/20s) & local A-Grade there.
I made my Queensland Cup debut in 2017, and from 2018 till mid-2019 I was at the Wests Tigers. I made my NRL debut for them in 2018.
Midway through 2019 I moved back to Brisbane with the Broncos, and now I’m at the Knights.
Proudest on-field moment?
Obviously my debut is up there. It’s a good feeling when you finally get to live out your dream of something you’ve wanted your whole life.
One of my favourite moments was I think in 2021, we were playing the Titans and it was sort of a make or break moment for me. It was my 4th game in 4 years, so I said to myself ‘it's now or never’. I took that game by the scruff of the neck, made it my own and played some pretty good footy.
Yeah that’s probably my favourite NRL moment.
Greatest off-field achievement:
I’m actually a licensed real-estate agent, so that’s pretty cool.
Thinking about life after footy, I don't really want to get back on the tools if I don't have to, so hopefully that’s there for me to start when I get settled into Newcastle a bit more.
Do you have any pets?
Yes! I’ve got 2 dogs, Remy (Rottweiler x American Staffie) and Moose (Bullmastiff x Bull-Arab).
Best piece of advice you’ve received?
It’s a bit of a cliche one. It’s ‘hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’.
I’m definitely not the most talented footballer you’ll ever see, but I’d like to think I compete hard on every tackle and in every play.
It's what I build my game around and that's something that resonates with me.
What do you eat before a game?
I like to go out for brekky on away trips, and I'm big on Eggs Benny’. I love good a eggs benny’, so if I’m on an away trip I’ll eat that.
If I'm at home it differs; toast in the morning or something. It depends on when the game is.
Favourite movie?
I’m a big fan of the Marvel movies so it’s hard to toss-up. I’ll go 'Avengers Endgame' just because it was such a good one.
Sport-wise, I’ll go 'Remember The Titans' or 'Green Street Hooligans'.
Favourite superhero?
Another tough one. I’m gonna go Spider-Man just because I like Tom Holland. He’s a weapon. Him or Iron Man.
Last TV series you watched?
I’ll give you two. I like Vikings, and that’s the last one I watched.
I like anime too; the last one I finished was Naruto and I’m halfway through One Piece.
Favourite Shapes flavour?
Oh, the Nacho Cheese ones.
Nacho cheese i’m tellin’ ya. It’s a game changer.
Any sporting heroes?
Obviously, being a Queenslander and wanting to play for Queensland, it’s hard to go past JT (Johnathan Thurston) for me.
Outside of that, Tom Brady. One of the last draft picks, and to be one of the best players, it's a pretty hectic story.
