Knights achieve first win in the NRLW

The nib Newcastle Knights NRLW side have won their opening Round 1 fixture against the Brisbane Broncos 32-14 at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday night.

The win is the Club's first win in the elite women's competition.

With a host of new faces on Club debut, halfback Jesse Southwell starred as the side scored six tries to the Broncos three in an impressive opening showing.

The match was off to a fiery start although it was the Knights who struck first with the youngest player on the field kickstarting the new season.

Jesse Southwell dummied into the line and broke through to score on her Club and NRLW debut, only five minutes into the contest.

The Broncos hit back through Julia Robinson on the right edge before Autumn-Rain Stephens Daly provided the swift reply.

A late Tarryn Aiken four-pointer for the away team reduced to scores to within six heading into the change of ends.

At the resumption of the second half, Co-Captain Hannah Southwell was forced off with an injury and ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The Knights started fast again earning quality field position.

Former Rooster Tayla Predebon extended the Knights lead powering her way to the line near the posts seven minutes into the second half.

Southwell was continuing to cause headaches for the Broncos and almost had a second soon after.

The Broncos worked their way back into the contest with Ali Brigginshaw chipping the ball over for Robinson's second of the night to bring the scores to 22-14.

Looking for the decisive match sealer, in fitting fashion, Caitlan Johnston stepped up to bulldoze her way to the line and assure the win for the Knights.
