NSW Cup - Knights 12-18 Magpies
The NSW Cup side went down by six points to the Western Suburbs Magpies in wet conditions on Saturday.
The Knights were off to a brilliant start when Lachlan Fitzgibbon scored a trademark 'Fitzy' try, running into a hole on the left edge in the first minute of the game.
Western Suburbs responded eight minutes later with quick hands down the left leading to a try to Israel Ogden.
The Magpies hit the front just shy of the 20 minute mark when Sione Fainu crashed over the line.
Newcastle trailed 12-6 at the break, while the Magpies extended their lead with another four-pointer nine minutes after half-time.
Fullback David Armstrong saved a 40/20 throwing the ball back into play, however the Magpies swarmed to pick up the loose ball and score.
Needing a try to stay in the game, the Cup side scored one of the tries of the season with an incredible team move.
Coming off their own try line, the ball shifted left to Brodie Jones, who made some metres and produced and offload to Fitzgibbon.
Fitzgibbon found Jake Clifford on the inside and the five-eighth broke through into the back field to set up Heath Gibbs to score under the posts.
The team went from coast-to-coast to notch a remarkable try with 19 minutes on the clock.
For the remaining minutes the Knights forced the issue, but couldn't find the elusive third try to go down by three tries to two.
The Cup team remain in ninth spot on the ladder and will take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs next start at home next Saturday.
