The Newcastle Knights wish to pay their respects following the passing this week of much-loved Old Boy, Newcastle Knight number 65, Jason ‘Monty’ Edwards.
A Macquarie Scorpions junior, Jason made his Knights first grade debut in round 10 of 1991 against Western Suburbs at Campbelltown.
At the age of 19 he scored four tries for Country Firsts against City - a team featuring Brad Fittler and Geoff Toovey – which earned him a call up to the Country Origin bench from coach Warren Ryan. That game led to a contract with the Knights.
A larger-than-life character and a proud Indigenous man, Jason was a regular at Old Boys Day and was respected and loved by all.
Gone way too soon at just 52, the Knights NRL and NRLW sides today wear black armbands in Jason’s honour. May he rest in peace.
