Woolnough: "Robbie O ate my Gold Fish"

Robbie O’Davis has been called many things by many people over the years.

Larrikin, O’Save-us, prankster... goldfish eater?

As hard as it might be to believe, legend has it a peckish O’Davis was both hungry and desperate enough to consume Adam Woolnough’s goldfish after a night of heavy celebration following the end of the season.

Inside the training mishap that ended Joey’s career

“I think it was one of the end-of-season celebrations after we’d finished the year,” Woolnough told the Our Town Our Team podcast.

“Josh (Perry) and I were living together, but I wasn’t home this particular weekend, and what I liked to cook in was my wok.

“I also had a couple of different pets, so I had a bird and a goldfish.”

With the team partying on through the night at the Perry-Woolnough residence, and Uber Eats still some 15 years from existence, a hungry O’Davis was left with little options when it came to sourcing some late-night nourishment.

Quit NRL to backpack the globe before swansong phone call

“The boys were out on a bit of a drink, and for some reason, the party seemed to have gone back to our house,” Woolnough said.

“So, Robbie O being the practical joker he was, he’s gone into the kitchen looking for some food.

“He saw the wok, turned it up and looked through the fridge and the freezer to see what he could cook up, nothing in there, typical of Josh and I at the time because we weren’t preparing for a game so there was no food in the fridge.”

With his options running low and his stomach growling, O’Davis turned to the fish-tank in an effort to conjure up a meal.

“The poor old goldfish, he was the one that got cooked up and slipped around the wok until Robbie O, from what I’m told, decided to consume the goldfish on that particular night,” Woolnough said.

O’Davis: The words that inspired the 2001 title

“I’ve never forgotten it and Robbie O, I’ll get you back one day.

“I can’t remember its name, I wish I could but I’m scarred, so I try to block it out.”
