The nib Newcastle Knights have signed Cook Islands representative Kayal Iro on a one-year under 20s contract.
A fullback, centre or winger, the 19-year-old has plenty of potential with a strong fend and powerful running game.
Iro is the son of former New Zealand star Kevin, as well as the nephew of coach Tony.
He was a standout for the Cook Islands in the World Cup 9s tournament where he scored two tries in their dominant 30-7 win over Tonga.

According to Knights Recruitment Manager, Alex McKinnon, the junior Kiwis representative has plenty to offer.
“Kayal is an energetic player,” McKinnon said.
“He can play anywhere in the backline and played fullback for the Cook Islands but I believe his best position is in the centres.
“He’s an athletic body with a lot of potential.”
Part of the Warriors system since 2016, Iro has climbed the ranks where the 20s gun made one appearance for the Warriors Canterbury Cup side in 2019.
He ran for 110 metres during that match and will provide great cover for the Knights in the backline.
