The nib Newcastle Knights fullback returns from a hamstring injury to face his former team North Queensland in their Round 20 clash in Townsville.
Ponga replaces Nick Meaney in the No.1 jersey with Meaney moving onto the extended bench.
In another boost for the Knights, Sione Mata'utia has made an unexpected return from a fractured eye socket.
The comeback of Mata'utia means Cory Denniss slips out of the 17.
Jack Cogger joins the bench as cover for Connor Watson who has an ankle complaint.
