New South Wales recorded their greatest ever Origin win at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night, defeating the Maroons 28-4 in the series opening match.

The Blues took a 12-4 lead into the break before piling on 16 unanswered points in the second half.

Newcastle's Dane Gagai performed strongly on the wing for Queensland, with a team high 220 total run metres. 

Gagai is expected to be available to play in the Knights' Friday night match against the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park, however he will be further assessed once he links with the team in Melbourne.

Cronulla's Andrew Fifita was named game one's Man of the Match.

Earlier, Newcastle's Danny Buderus coached the NSW Under 20s to a 30-16 win over the Maroons.

The Blues turned around a six-point half time deficit to secure their sixth consecutive victory in the Under-20s Origin.

The Knights' Nick Meaney played at fullback.
