Hundreds turned out to meet the Newcastle Knights when the team paid a special visit to Ellerslie Junior Rugby League Club in the lead up to the Auckland Nines tournament.

The Newcastle Knights joined more than 230 players to visit 15 local Junior Rugby League Clubs in Auckland on Thursday ahead of this weekend’s inaugural Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park.

The Knights were on hand for a signing session, with all the juniors keen to meet the NRL players.

The Nines team also had the opportunity to interact with the children in modified football clinics.

Knight Willie Mason enjoyed meeting Auckland’s locals and rugby league fans and said the unique tournament is a great event for the city.

“The whole NRL is here, there are superstars everywhere,” Mason said.

“I just think it’s going to be exciting, especially for Auckland.

“Even for someone who doesn’t even like rugby league, or follows Union, it will be good to just to watch it as a whole spectacle.

“They’ve sold out Eden Park two days in a row so it’s something special.

Newcastle open their Nines campaign against the Sharks at 10.35am on Saturday, before meeting the Titans at 2.45pm and finally coming up against the Tigers on Sunday at 10.25am.
